Tribe of the day

Uganda is an amazing country. Last night I learned something new about the tribes and culture in this country.

One of the tribes here are Baganda, representing the biggest tribe in Uganda. The red shade is the Buganda area.

So, in this one of many conversations with Hassan last night he could tell me that when you speak of yourself you say Muganda, meaning someone from Buganda in one person. If you talk about several people it will be Baganda. They speak Luganda. Each tribe is a kingdom, Bugandas king are called Kabaka, and one of Kabakas residence are just close to one of the gates here at Kyambogo University. Meaning I am almost his neighbour.

Each tribe has clans. In Buganda there is about 50 clans.
Your last name should represent your clan.  If I got this right one of the clans are named Mbogo (buffalo.) You can not marry someone from your own clan, nor from your mothers clan. But you can marry someone from your own tribe or any other tribe.
Very interesting facts to know.

Wish our king looked like this?

Hassan also explained that they could trace their families back to the same clan if he met someone with his clan name, but living in a different clan.
So whenever Hassan meet someone new on the street he will know the religion and tribe of the other person once he or she tells him his/her name. First name is often a name connected to the religion your parents and you belong to. Last name is tribe and clan name.
So what is Hassan religion?

That was the tribe of the day.

I will surely miss the coffee evenings and talking with Hassan when I go home to Norway.
